Africa's Health Champions: IPPF Regions' Achievements in 2023

IPPF Africa Region has released its 2023 achievements video highlighting impactful work across the continent this past year. The 2-minute video gives a snapshot of IPPF's support for expanding access to family planning, advancing sexual and reproductive health rights through advocacy, supporting gender, equality, providing comprehensive sexuality education for youth, increasing access to safe abortion care, and eliminating harmful practices.

2022 Annual Performance Report

IPPF delivered a total of 226.9 million sexual and reproductive health services, including 5 million safe abortion services, an increase of 11% from 2021. IPPF Member Associations served more vulnerable people in humanitarian settings than ever before: a total of 10 million in 2022. Across the globe, IPPF MAs are fighting back, challenging unjust laws and policies and spreading our powerful messages. We have won major victories. In Colombia, the Latin American Green Wave of abortion rights successes continued as the country’s highest court decriminalized abortion. Globally, IPPF achieved 150 advocacy wins in 2022 to support or defend sexual and reproductive health and rights and gender equality in policy or legislation, 24% more than in 2021. Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa

The Maputo Protocol The Protocol to the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa (Maputo Protocol) remains one of the most progressive legal instruments providing a comprehensive set of human rights for African women. Unlike any other women’s human rights instrument, it details wide-ranging and substantive human rights for women covering the entire spectrum of civil and political, economic, social and cultural as well as environmental rights. It would not be incorrect to name it the African Bill of Rights of Women’s Human Rights. YA Magazine - The Journal of Youth Action Movement - Dec 2022

In order to complete the year 2022, the youths of the YAM have set themselves the goal of producing a magazine called “YA” magazine. By creating it, young people from French, Portuguese and English-speaking Africa wanted to assert themselves through their various actions. “YA” Magazine is a new formula for the commitment of young Africans to sexual and reproductive health. It is also a way of presenting what young people are doing. “YA” is not just short for Youth Action Movement. “YA” is also a way of saying “Yes we work, yes we can. A way of proclaiming loudly that the YAM is doing, the YAM is working. Click on the below image to download read the magazine.

IPPF Policy on Sex Work

The IPPF Sex Work Policy makes clear the position and commitments of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) with regards to sex work. This is the first time IPPF has taken a position on sex work, and presents human rights-based values and principles which apply broadly to all contexts, without being prescriptive about approaches or actions. It aims to provide a framework to guide IPPF’s programming, service delivery and advocacy, and is based on sex workers’ lived experiences in all their diversity. It is rooted in positions taken by sex worker-led organizations and networks across the world, and in documents that IPPF has discussed and published in the last few years, particularly Sexual Rights: An IPPF declaration Member Associations (MAs) of IPPF are encouraged to use the policy as guidance to be integrated into their commitment to respect, protect and advance the rights of sex workers throughout their activities, advocacy and policies, as relevant to their strategic goals and national contexts.
