Role Purpose: 

The Graphic Design Consultant will be responsible for developing high-quality visual designs that enhance IPPF Africa Region’s (IPPFAR) communication, advocacy, and outreach efforts. This role involves translating complex information into engaging, visually compelling materials that align with IPPFAR’s branding guidelines. The consultant will design key communication products, including the 2024 Annual Report, the 2025 Annual Factsheet, social media graphics for international days, and an SRHR-themed card game for youth engagement. By delivering innovative and impactful designs, the consultant will play a crucial role in increasing IPPFAR’s visibility, supporting advocacy initiatives, and engaging diverse audiences.

Context of Role:

IPPFAR is a leading provider of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) services and advocacy in Africa. Effective communication and visual storytelling are essential to strengthening IPPFAR’s impact, particularly in a rapidly evolving media landscape. The Graphic Design Consultant will work closely with IPPFAR’s communication team to produce visually engaging content that resonates with key stakeholders, including donors, policymakers, and young people. This consultancy comes at a critical time when IPPFAR seeks to expand its digital presence, enhance advocacy through creative visual narratives, and reinforce its brand identity. The consultant’s work will contribute to shaping public discourse, countering opposition narratives, and advancing SRHR through strategic and compelling design.

About IPPF Africa Region:

The International Planned Parenthood Federation Africa Region (IPPFAR) is one of the leading sexual and reproductive health (SRH) service delivery organization in Africa, and a leading sexual and reproductive health and rights advocacy voice in the region through its Member Associations (MAs) and Collaborative Partners in 39 countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, the overarching goal of IPPFAR is to increase access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) services to the most vulnerable youth, men and women in the region. To reach this goal, IPPFAR works with Governments, the African Union (AU), regional economic commissions (RECs), the Pan-African Parliament, the United Nations, among others, to expand political and financial commitments to SRHR in Africa. Objective of Consultancy:

IPPFAR is seeking a skilled graphic designer (individual or firm) to develop high-quality visual designs for key communication products, ensuring alignment with IPPFAR’s branding guidelines. By producing these designs, the graphic designer will play a crucial role in enhancing IPPFAR’s visibility, advocacy, and outreach efforts. To this end, IPPFAR invites individuals or firms to submit their Expression of Interest for consultancy services to support the production of these materials.

These products include:

  1. The Annual IPPFAR Report 2024 – A comprehensive and visually engaging 50-page (A4) publication highlighting key achievements, programs, and initiatives. The designer will be responsible for the creative art direction, look and feel, layout, design, and creation of graphic elements, using raw copy and photographs provided in English and French by IPPFAR. The final report should be modern, visually appealing. The look and feel of the report should be attractive to government officials and donors and will be designed in a classic, simple but elegant style.

  1. The IPPFAR annual Factsheet 2025 - An informative and visually appealing factsheet that will showcase key achievements, programs, and initiatives. The copy for the factsheet will be provided in English and French by IPPFAR and the designer will work on the design, layout, and graphic elements to produce a modern and visually appealing factsheet. The factsheet will mirror the Annual IPPFAR Report 2024 in its style and look and feel.

Please note that the factsheet is in the format of a 6-page A4 size document (front and back) and will be printed on a 3-panel format as in the reference picture below.

  1. International Days Social Media Graphics – To support IPPFAR’s advocacy efforts, the designer will create 15 compelling, political cartoon-style visuals in English for international and regional days relevant to SRHR. These graphics will be based on humour, exaggeration, and irony to criticize or comment on SRHR’s opposition groups. The cartoons will reflect the sentiments of our time, providing insight into public opinion and societal values, especially in relation to SRHR and movements, and will be optimized for digital platforms (Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn). Please see examples and references here, here, here and here. The social media graphics will be produced in English only.
  1. A Card Game on SRHR for Youth Engagement – A creative and educational tool designed to engage young people in a fun and interactive way, enhancing their understanding of sexual and reproductive health and rights. The designer will develop the game’s visual identity, creative art direction, look and feel, layout, design, and creation of graphic elements, using raw copy provided in English and French to ensure an engaging and informative experience. The design work will be required on 60 double-sided individual cards containing questions and answers, emojis, SRHR elements and branding and the card deck packaging. The content will be in English and French, and the dimensions of the card deck and packaging will be 14.2 × 9.2 × 2 cm (identical to an UNO card deck and packaging).

 

Scope of work / Deliverables:

The selected graphic designer will be responsible for producing high-quality designs for the four key communication products: the IPPFAR annual report 2024, the IPPFAR annual Factsheet 2025, International Days social media graphics 2025, and an SRHR-themed card game for youth engagement.

The designer is expected to:

1.         Creative Briefing & Concept Development

•           Attend initial briefing meetings with the IPPFAR team to understand the vision, themes, and objectives for each product.

•           Propose two distinct art directions for each product, including fonts, colour palettes, patterns, graphic elements, image styling, illustration style, and in-situ examples.

2.         Design Execution

•           Once an art direction is approved, apply it to the content provided by IPPFAR for each product.

•           Develop drafts and iterations in alignment with IPPFAR’s branding guidelines.

3.         Feedback & Revisions

•           Incorporate feedback from the IPPFAR team to refine the designs.

•           Ensure all necessary adjustments are made before final approval.

4.         French Language Adaptation

•           Apply the approved English version of the IPPFAR Annual Report, IPPFAR Factsheet, and Card Game  to create a French version, ensuring design consistency and language accuracy.

5.         Final Deliverables

•           Provide final optimized files for multiple formats:

•           Social media (optimized for LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram)

•           Website (high-resolution digital formats)

•           Print (ready-to-print PDFs with crop marks and bleed)

•           Editable working files (Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, or other relevant formats)

6.         Timely Delivery & Deadlines

•           Respect strict deadlines, particularly for international days.

•           Ensure final social media graphics for international days are delivered at least 48 hours before the scheduled commemoration date (see table below with the 15 selected dates).

This structured approach will ensure the production of engaging, high-quality, and timely communication materials that effectively support IPPFAR’s advocacy and visibility efforts.

 

Expertise:

The successful consultant will have a strong background in graphic design, with a proven track record of producing high-quality visual materials for advocacy, communications, and outreach. They should have experience working with international organizations, NGOs, or advocacy groups, particularly in the fields of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), human rights, or social justice. The consultant should demonstrate:

  • Extensive experience in creative art direction, branding, and visual storytelling.
  • Proficiency in designing reports, factsheets, infographics, and social media content.
  • Experience developing materials for diverse audiences, including policymakers, donors, and young people.
  • A solid understanding of digital and print design principles, including layout, typography, and color theory.
  • Ability to create engaging and culturally relevant visuals that align with IPPFAR’s mission and advocacy goals.

 

Skills:

The ideal consultant will possess a combination of technical, creative, and project management skills, including:

  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) and other relevant design tools.
  • Strong conceptual and creative thinking, with the ability to translate complex ideas into compelling visuals.
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to maintain brand consistency across multiple products.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to incorporate feedback constructively and iterate designs efficiently.
  • Familiarity with bilingual design requirements (English and French) to ensure accurate adaptation.
  • Experience designing engaging and informative materials optimized for digital and print formats.

Applicants should also provide at least three samples demonstrating different art styles. Additionally, an itemized financial quote should be included. Modality of Payment:
  • The consultant will be paid 25% of the total contract amount upon signing of the contract agreement with IPPFAR;
  • 25% upon submission of the final designs of the IPPFAR annual report in English and French;
  • The remaining 50% upon delivery of all files in the agreed formats.

Please note that IPPFAR will deduct 5% withholding tax for local (Kenyan based individuals) and 20% for non-Kenyan based individual consultants before issuing payments.
